What Is Large Format Printing? Banners, Signs and Wraps Explained
February 24, 2025

Large format printing is any printing on material wider than a standard sheet press can handle, usually 24 inches up to 5 feet wide or more. It's how banners, window graphics, wall murals, vehicle graphics, trade show displays and rigid signs get made. At Classic Printing & Signs in Birmingham we print large format on roll-fed printers for vinyl and fabric, and on a 4x8 UV flatbed for rigid boards.
What materials can be printed large format?
| Material | Common uses |
|---|---|
| 13 oz scrim vinyl | Outdoor banners, fence banners |
| Adhesive vinyl | Window and wall graphics, vehicle lettering |
| Perforated window film | Storefront and rear-window graphics you can see out of |
| Fabric | Flags, backdrops, table throws |
| Coroplast | Yard signs and real estate signs |
| Aluminum composite (ACM) | Long-term exterior signs |
| PVC, foam board, acrylic | Indoor signage, displays, awards |
How is large format different from regular printing?
Regular commercial printing runs sheets up to about 13 x 19 inches. Large format runs off rolls or a flatbed, so size is limited by the material, not the press. The inks are built for the job too: UV-cured and solvent-based inks hold up outdoors, where office toner would fade in weeks.
How long do large format prints last outside?
It depends on the material and lamination. A laminated vinyl banner or ACM sign typically holds color for years outdoors. Unlaminated prints in full Alabama sun fade faster. Tell us where it's going and for how long, and we'll spec the material to match.
How fast can you print a banner?
Many banners and signs qualify for our 24-hour printing. Larger or custom-finished jobs take a few business days after proof approval.
How do you choose a large format printer?
- Ask what equipment they run. Roll-to-roll and flatbed cover different jobs.
- Ask about laminate and outdoor ratings, not just price per square foot.
- Get a proof with exact finished size, grommets, pole pockets or mounting called out.
- Pick someone local who can fix a problem the same week.
